Using the principle of virtual displacements in an updated Lagrangian framework, the element stiffness can be described using three stiffness matrices. These are; the linear, geometric and deformation stiffness matrices (AIBermani and Kitipornchai 1990a). The geometric stiffness matrix introduces the effect of initial stresses on the element stiffness whereas the deformation stiffness matrix introduces the necessary coupling between the axial stretching and the flexural and torsional deformations and hence greatly reduces the number of elements required to model the tower structure in a large displacement nonlinear analysis.
