It strikes me that a single document should not be extrapolated to infer the management principles of Edo-period merchant families, although the document is admittedly of historical interest.

One good example of this phenomenon is the DuPont Company, the integrated chemical manufacturing giant. Dr. Katsuyuki Ozawa has this to say about DuPont and the du Pont family (although some early members of the family spelled their name “de Pont,” the spellings have been consistently rendered “du Pont” throughout this book): For 165 years, from the time of the company’s founding until its 11th president stepped down in 1967, the positions of company president and chairman were occupied solely by members of the du Pont family (meaning that they were either direct descendents or the spouses of direct descendents).

14 I must say, however, that I question whether Church fully understands the true difference between family-owned enterprises and family enterprises. Although Church states that a number of familyowned enterprises, both large and small, developed in Germany, the United Kingdom, and Japan between World War I and World War II, and in the post–World War II period, and contributed to economic growth in each country, I have strong suspicions that quite a few of these businesses were actually family-owned enterprises in which salaried managers were in charge of top management with the enterprises run under their command.
